چکیده

Toxicity of four types of industrial wastewater, treated by Fenton’s reagent, was analyzed. Toxicity was measured using bioluminescent bacteria Vibrio fischeri NRRL B-11177. Application of Fenton’s reagent was a efficient method for treatment of this wastewater. Nevertheless, high efficiency of organic components degradation was not always followed by reduction of toxicity to a very low level. In all cases, in order to achieve total reduction of toxicity, it was necessary to increase both the H2O2 dose and reaction time. It was concluded that optimization of Fenton’s reaction should be performed assuming toxicity changes in the examined wastewater. Reduction in toxicity should be a critical measure of the success of this method. Such an approach should be general practice in relation to all hazardous industrial wastewater.

Leather tanning effluents are a source of severe environmental impacts. In particular, the unhairing stage, belonging to the beamhouse processes, generates an alkaline wastewater with high concentrations of organic matter, sulphides, suspended solids, and salts, which shows significant toxicity. The objective of this work was to evaluate the biodegradation of this industrial wastewater by combi...

Textile Dyeing Wastewater Treatment by Coupling Fenton’s Reagent and Aerobic Sequencing Batch Reactor Processes

The oxidation of organic compounds and color removal of a synthetic dyeing effluent when treated with a combination of Fenton’s Reagent and biological oxidation in a sequencing batch reactor was evaluated in this work. A central composite design approach was used to find the best conditions of temperature, hydrogen peroxide and ferrous ion concentrations that maximize color and dissolved organi...

Fenton’s Reagent for the Treatment of Pharmaceutical Industry Wastewater

Pharmaceutical industry often generates highly toxic wastewater and sludge depending upon the used manufacturing process and season. The high BOD to COD ratio of this particular wastewater makes biological treatment difficult. Hence chemical treatment proves to be a useful option. Fenton’s reagent is used in the treatment of pharmaceutical industry wastewater in this study. The ferrous and hydr...

Chemical Oxidation Process For The Treatment Of Antibiotic Wastewater

There is growing concern from the scientific community that pharmaceutical compounds are not treated sufficiently by current wastewater treatment methods and therefore trace amounts of such compounds are being identified in surface water, ground water and sewage effluents. Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) are now being proposed for the specific treatment of industrial wastewaters and wastewa...

Removal of COD and Colour from Sanitary Landfill Leachate by using Coagulation

This study investigated two methods for the removal of COD and colour from sanitary landfill leachates. The first method involved the use of coagulation/flocculation process using FeCl3 as a conventional coagulant and Ca(OH)2 as base-precipitant. The second method involved integration of Fenton’s reagent into the coagulation/flocculation process. Concentration of FeCl3 that reduced chemical oxy...
